Summer in February
I recently went to see the film Summer in February with a few of my family – 14 of us in all! We were brought up at Lamorna and our Great Aunt and Uncle were artists in Lamorna at the time the film was set, so we felt a particular affinity with it! Now on general release it is well worth seeing – it is a true life story about a love triangle amongst the Lamorna artists prior to the First World War. Cornwall looks fantastic in the film, although very little was actually shot at Lamorna. Trereife House and its stables appear frequently – the Stable Yard Café at Trereife (just outside Penzance) is a wonderful spot for some lovely food whilst sitting where numerous scenes were shot.
‘The Morning Ride’ by Alfred Munnings is the pivotal painting of the film – its a vibrant painting of a beautiful woman on horseback. And I’m delighted to say this fabulous painting features as the front cover of the Newlyn Artists Calendar 2014. Munnings painting of the Lamorna pub known as The Wink is also seen in the film and again is in the calendar, as are a number of other Lamorna artists including Lamorna Birch and Charles Naper (my great Uncle). Newlyn artists such as Stanhope Forbes, Elizabeth Forbes, Harold Harvey and more feature in the calendar too.
The Newlyn Artists Calendar 2014 can be bought direct from myself by mail order at www.evocativecornwall.co.uk or at Penlee House Gallery in Penzance, they are also in numerous shops throughout Cornwall – get in touch if you would like to know if they are in a shop near you. Don’t leave it to the last minute to buy, as I sold out last year!
It’s a unique and very beautiful calendar, a wonderful reminder of Summer in February.
