We adore this tiny valley and cove. As the tide drops, a beautiful stretch of sand appears and, with a careful eye on the incoming tide, it is possible to walk along it to Porthtowan. The Atlantic swells deliver their finest year-round, for surfers and body boarders. And if you don't fancy braving the water, dark caves tempt you in to explore.
Once alive with Cornwall's mining heritage, ruined buildings and mine waste cover much of the cliff top now cloaked by a carpet of heather and gorse. But it is the sight of Wheal Coates engine house perched as it is on the cliff edge and spectacularly dominating the view from the beach that sets the scene apart.
So beloved by the Cornish worldwide. While it might be an overused adjective, this landscape is truly iconic!
