The mounds of Thrift around the coast each spring are a much-loved and much-anticipated sight.  Just one of many species that spring to life at that time, they seem to capture the imagination more than others, whether that is due to their colour, the pillowy shapes of the clumps as they grow or their sheer resilience in the face of the Atlantic weather. 

Sea Pinks is the common name that I remember more in use in my childhood, when each garden seemed to have clusters growing over the garden walls, but I was later taught to always use the Latin name of a plant to avoid misunderstanding - Armeria maritima!
